Licensed Building Practitioners or LBPs are designers, carptenters, brick and block layers, roofers, external plasterers, site and foundations specialists who have been assessed to be competent to carry out work essential to a residential building's structure or weather tightness.
This scheme was introduced in November 2007/ From 1 March 2012, building practitioners must have been licensed in order to carry out or supervise work on homes and small-medium sized apartment buildings that is critical to the integrity of the building.
The 'Restricted Building Work' includes the design and construction of foundations, framing, roofing and cladding. It also applies to the design of active fire safety systems in small to medium sized apartment buildings.
Each license class has a series of competencies within the LBP rules that set a minimum standard for licensing. All licensed building practitioners are assessed against these standards to become and remain licensed.
